MINUTES OF THE CLASS MEETING FOR ENGLISH 303.01

Class absences: Dr. Adams took attendance. Laura Hyatt, Joy Peeler, and Galadriel Mitchell were recorded as absent.

Homework from previous class: Dr. Adams collected the worksheet she had assigned on August 26, 1998.

Dr. Adams’s home page: Through use of the computer lab, Dr. Adams showed the class how to find her home page. Her instructions consisted of the following steps;

    1. Activate the Netscape Communicator by clicking the icon on the screen or by using the "Start" menu.
    2. Use the address http://www.maryadams.net/ to get to Dr. Adams’s home page.
    3. Note that the home page can be used to serve a variety of functions. For example, the globe at the top of the page can be used to e-mail Dr. Adams.
    4. Click on the picture of the fish that has the word "teaching" underneath it.
    5. Select "English 303" and note that it is possible to e-mail the entire class or look at the class schedule.
Uploading documents: Through use of the computer lab, Dr. Adams taught the class how to upload documents. Her instructions consisted of the following steps;
    1. After accessing the Netscape Communicator, use the address http://www.wcu.edu/win to use the WIN system.
    2. Once the WIN system is activated type in social security number, type in password, and choose "Student Current." The password for those who have never used WIN is the individual’s month and year of birth.
    3. Click on the box entitled "Access Appserver One."
    4. Click on English 303.
    5. Choose "Webwriters careers.doc."
    6. Click on "Retrieve Marked File."
    7. Save as a different file name on Drive A. For example, use the name "webwriters.doc."
    8. Minimize Netscape by hitting the small horizontal line in the right hand corner of the screen.
    9. Click on the "My Computer" icon.
    10. Double click on Drive A.
    11. Print out this document because the information from this sheet will be discussed on Monday.
    12. Afterwards Word can be exited.
Downloading documents: Through use of the computer lab, Dr. Adams taught the class how to download documents. Her instruction consisted of the following steps;
    1. Click on the "My Computer" icon and pretend that this is an assignment to be turned in.
    2. Change the name of the assignment so that it reads as the individual’s first name initial, last name, and "1." For example, kbritt.1.
    3. Activate Netscape and get into the WIN system as done previously.
    4. Follow the same steps until the box "Access Appserver 1" has been opened.
    5. Click on "Drop File."
    6. Click on "English 303."
    7. Click on "Browse."
    8. Click on "Drive A."
    9. Go to "All Files" and choose the assignment.
Homework for next class: Dr. Adams requested that serious thought be given to the topics for the upcoming research papers.
