  • Are the following examples sentences or fragments? If they are fragments, correct them.
    • Anne Adams, who turned 46 last month.
    • Because she was the president of the local humane society.
    • Having read the chapters and having completed the homework.
    • Stop!
    • Purdue offers many majors in engineering. Such as electrical, chemical, and industrial engineering.
    • The current policy on housing is unfair to working mothers. Which is why we believe the proposed amendments should pass.
    • Because I asked nicely, you should obey me.
    • Toys of all kinds thrown everywhere.
    • By paying too much attention to polls can make a political leader unwilling to propose innovative policies.
  • Correct the following run-on (includng sentences that use semicolons in front of subordinate clauses) or comma splice sentences.
    • Our galaxy has billions of planets only one is thought to have intelligent life.
    • Alan is never interested in television during the summer however on warm summer nights he will watch reruns of Miami Vice.
    • The dog took both the frisbee and the bone from its owner; hoping the owner wouldn't notice and wagging its tail.
  • Make the following sentences grammatically parallel by making sure all coordinate items (equal items joined in a series by commas or by and, nor, but, or,yet, or so anboys) are structured the same way and in the same tense, voice, and mood. If necessary, divide the sentence:
    • The copy editor was asked to edit the text quickly, accurately, and in a detailed manner
    • The teacher told the students that they should stop texting, that they should look up compound words, and to study the homework about number style.
    • The dictionary can be used for these purposes: to find syllable breaks, pronunciations, correct spellings, and distinguishing compound from hyphenated words.
    • Harold runs, skates, bikes, and was captain of the baseball team.
  • Fix the dangling or misplaced modifiers by rewriting the sentence:
    • We saw the wild boars riding inside the Landrover.
    • Without knowing his name, it was difficult to introduce him.
    • Tired from a long day at work, your couch is your sanctuary.
    • Having missed the train to work, a cab was the next best thing.
  • Is the number style correct? If so, put a check mark. If not, correct the sentence.
    • 15 dogs attacked Cindy.
    • Cindy attacked 15 dogs.
    • My phone has eight MB RAM.
  • In these examples, check the answers in the editing book (DPES) and the AP Style Guide. If they disagree, write out the sentence in both styles and label them.
    • I can't believe I am almost fifty years old.
    • The temperature will be in the high sixties.
    • They had 10 donkeys and 2 cats.
    • I counted 1254 horseflies.
